COPE is about identity and identity formation. Our behaviour and views of ourselves and 'the other' are examined through experiences and events passed down from generation to generation. What connects us, and in what ways do we differ from one another? How heavily do the perceptions, experiences and views of the generations before us weigh on the present?

In COPE, Monique Duurvoort explored her multicultural background and the inner conflict this brings about for her, emotionally, in daily life. Gaining insight into, and drawing connections between, present-day behaviours and views and historical patterns, referencing the complex Dutch history of slavery and its continuing impact on the present.

For COPE, Monique was partly inspired by the work of African American artist Kara Walker and American illustrator Norman Rockwell.
