Het Nationale Ballet
Created for the workshop programme of Het Nationale Ballet (Dutch National Ballet).
"Meanwhile on the other side..." was Monique Duurvoort's very first choreography.
The title refers to the fact that, in front of the main entrance of the Muziektheater in Amsterdam — home to, among others, Het Nationale Ballet, the company Monique Duurvoort danced for over many years — breakdancers were always training on the marble floor. These dancers were often sent away.
Inside the prestigious, world-class theatre, no one paid any attention to them, and clearly failed to realise that the future of dance was literally being created and shaped right outside their door.
Drawing on Monique's background in academic dance, as well as the experience she gained with other dance styles in the Amsterdam club circuit, she took, with this first choreography, her first steps towards creating her own cross-over choreographic style.
